About the Project

VOYAGER DEEP is a project with a mission to develop and deploy a new class of sophisticated, cost-effective, miniature Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that could revolutionize the way we explore deep-sea environments down to the depths of 11000 m. The areas below 6000 m are currently unreachable by unmanned underwater vehicles!

Who is it designed for?

It is being designed particularly for scientific expeditions in the fields of marine biology and geology to explore and survey deep-sea environments.

What does it do?

VOYAGER DEEP will provide highest quality 4K video transects at any depth or terrain. Such transects are ideal to map deep-sea biodiversity and capture diverse scientific data using multiple modular on-board sensors and water samplers (e.g., eDNA).

How deep does it go?

It will be able to operate at any depth down to extreme depths of 11000 m. This opens up exciting new opportunities for exploration in the abyssal and hadal zones, which are hard to access. But unlike many unmanned vehicles with quality camera systems, it can go up to some very shallow areas as well. This is ideal for single run transects through the rariphotic and mesophotic zones, e.g. starting at the depth of 500 m and finishing at the depth of 5 m.

A Video Transect Demonstration

Below is a linear video transect recorded autonomously by the VOYAGER DEEP AUV prototype on her second ever sea dive on 29 September 2021 in shallow water of the Northern Adriatic Sea at the speed of 1 km/h. This video was not shot with a quality 4K camera that is yet to come.

How Does it Work?

VOYAGER DEEP silently records high definition 4K forward-looking video transects just 30 cm above the seabed, and captures diverse scientific data using multiple modular on-board sensors and water samplers (e.g., eDNA). Due to its relatively small dimensions and low mass, the AUV will be easily portable and deployable by a single person even on smaller vessels of opportunity without the need of a crane, and thus very cost-effective to operate. These attributes will also allow for the possibility to scale the system, enabling simultaneous release of a group of AUVs into the area of interest.


How Does VOYAGER DEEP See the World?

Below are two views of the same simulated environment that show the difference of how VOYAGER DEEP sees the same scene in comparison to modern large ROVs. A view close to the seafloor has several advantages for detailed work, such as better visual recognition of certain features and organisms – email me to further discuss these advantages for your mission.

How will it be available?

It will be commercially available to deep-sea researchers as a service with the aim to simplify access to deep-sea environments. Pre-bookings are now also open.

Will it support open data sharing?

When organizing and executing future expeditions with VOYAGER DEEP, a model of open sharing of environmental scientific data will be employed whenever possible. This will provide an added value for public outreach, education, and the purposes of ocean conservation.

Current project status

The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the project is currently 4 – 6. After several thousand hours of development, the first sea dives in September 2021 were a huge success and proved the concept. Several crucial subsystems have been developed in 2022, and first deep dives are expected to begin in 2023.

Who Created VOYAGER DEEP?


The lead engineer and creator behind VOYAGER DEEP is Gregor Kervina. He embraces a transdisciplinary problem-solving approach, thinking by first principles, and embracing miniaturization. His main expertise lies in marine robotics, electrical engineering, industrial design, physics, imaging and photography. He also has an in-depth understanding of biology and is experienced with field work, which is very valuable when it comes to collaboration with marine biologists. In addition, he is a professional photographer, astronomer and author of three books – two of them about Seychelles. His work has been featured by NASA and selected among the Top Ten Space Pictures of 2007 by National Geographic.
